Copper artisans abound throughout the world, however the artisans that have gained a great reputation for making beautiful copper sinks have been primarily centered in charming Mexico. Being more specific, they live in a region in the mountains of central western Mexico, in the state of Michoacan. Most of the shops making “hand crafted” copper sinks you can find are rather small and owned by the artisan’s family. Making this activity the main economic engine of the region, and the main source of living necesities for most families there.
The term “hand hammered” copper sinks has become synonymous with the original Mexican artisan copper sinks in recent years. This term refers to the original ancient techniques that the groups of artisans living in Santa Clara have been using for centuries in this area of western Mexico. As a first step Copper sheets are heated ina fire and then they are carefully and patiently hammered by the artisans into the shape they want and then they are hand finished until the artisan gets the characteristics of the piece they have in mind. The results are somewhat rustic; but they are always unique, charming and one of a kind.
Once you install one of these beautiful sinks in your bathroom or kitchen you will know you have a unique piece of hand made copper art installed at home. They are very different to other copper sinks made in series, which are fabricated with somehow similar techniques but have a “smooth” finish rather than a “hand hammered” one.
